From our friend Paul Tutton, here's a fabulous Riesling from New Zealand, with a comparable travel-based carbon impact (which we fully offset) to a Riesling from Germany - believe it or not! It's also non-certified organic (certification will apply from the 2021 vintages).
Bone dry and acidic, this quality wine oozes citrus fruits, apple and pear and a bit of wet stone. Pale barley straw in colour with vibrant yellow, silver and green hues. This wine gives off sense of tension and youth. Aromas of lime leaf, blossom and fruit are so pure and inviting. As it evolves in the glass it reveals subtleties like dusty dry herbs, juniper and gravel. The taste is reminiscent of a perfect Mandarin, so bursting with sweet flavour the acid provides direction and pithy phenolics provide a lingering dry mouthfeel.
Pairs well with pork, shellfish, poultry and charcuterie.
About the vineyard:
Paul Tutton has a special place in out heart, as the founder of Waterloo Wines, the precursor to our partners at Lant Street Wine, as well as head of this family-run vineyard in North Canterbury, New Zealand.
The family bought Waipara West in 1989 knowing that, although it was an unsuccessful rabbit infested sheep farm, it had a combination of factors suitable for the production of quality grapes. The vines they planted then are now producing the most incredible vintages, year after year.
Sustainability credentials: Making good progress (1*)
Practicing organic viticulture for over a decade, Waipara West has finally undergone certification - although this will only apply from 2021 vintages. It is certified as sustainable by Sustainable Winemaking New Zealand. And if you're worried about shipping miles - don't: sea freight is very efficient, and Collectivino offset the carbon impact of the 6 week voyage to the UK.
