A great value Viognier from Christophe Muret at Domaine de Castelnau.
Tasting notes:
Clear pale lemon with hits of green. A developed nose with aromas of peach and jasmine. Smooth and buttery in the mouth with pear and sweet almonds, and a bit spicy on the finish.
About the winemaker:
Christophe Muret was once the biggest exporter of melons in France, but traded this in for his love of wine in the hills where this incredible Viognier is made.
His enthusiasm for his vines, which he cultivates on a minimal intervention principle (and is in effect organic), is infectious. His vines are set upon a garrigue filled outcrop of red clay and limestone, with loamy soils, exposed to cooling winds which help to retain freshness in the wines.
Sustainability rating: Making good progress (1*)
Plenty of great sustainable practices, and is in effect organic (but uncertified) - minimal use of sulphites, uses pheromones rather than chemical pesticide and recycles waste water. Still uses mechanical harvesting.
