A cuvée in tribute to Germaine, mother of Emma, this is a very special wine, vinified in a concrete egg that was a wedding anniversary gift from Emma to winemaker husband Marc, and is a top pick of Ruchira on the Collectivino team.
Viticulture and Characteristics of the Season
The grapes that originate this wine grows in the upper part of the Terra Remota vineyard, facing the Mediterranean. It is a granitic soil, with good fertility, cultivated through organic agriculture and surrounded by native trees.
During the summer before harvest time, the great luminosity and effect of the north wind (tramontana) shaped the character of this Black Grenache. Thus, a
great aromatic development was achieved, with excellent sanitary conditions and perfect phenolic ripeness at harvest time at the end of September.
Winemaking and Ageing
Gg is a special wine for many reasons, one of them is the vinification carried out in concrete eggs, which allows self-fermentation and self-aging due to the shape of this deposit and the microporosity of its material. Therefore, maximum varietal expression is achieved, with minimal intervention, in a protected environment and extending the skin maceration for 5 weeks.
During aging, the wine manages to round out its tannins, reach colour stabilisation and keep aromatic freshness, thanks to the constant movement of its fine lees for 9 months. A Grenache 100% representative of the Empordà, its climate and its surroundings is obtained, unfiltered, straight into the bottle.
Tasting Notes and Food Pairing
This wine is a tribute to Germaine, mother of Emma, grandmother of Adèle and Adrien, through the elegance of a glass of wine. Captivating garnet red colour with violet reflections. It shows very fresh aromas of raspberry, sour cherry, wildflowers and freshly cut grass. On palate it's silky, with ripe and present tannins. Long, enveloping, and seductive finish.
Enjoying this wine is easy, a good table of artisan cheeses, local ham, a wide range of olives and bread with tomato (pa amb tomaquet) is enough to appreciate it in all its magnitude. It also works very well with dishes such as chicken with shrimp a “sea and mountain preparation” so typical of the Costa Brava, gnocchi with pesto and parmesan, truffled eggs and even a fine Sacher cake.
About the vineyard & winemaker
The DO Terra Alta was founded in 1982, the most southern wine region of Catalonia, and is located between the Ebro delta and the Aragon lands. Its sublime landscapes have allowed it to be recognized by UNESCO as a biodiversity reserve. Inland, its spectacular landscapes influenced by the Mediterranean offer an extremely varied flora. The limestone mountain ranges, pre-coastal traversed by rivers are sprinkled with green oak woods and white pine woods but also agricultural land for the cultivation of almond trees, vines and olive trees, typical crops of Terra Alta.
These lands benefit from a dry Mediterranean climate with a strong continental influence during the winter as well as an important exposure to the sun and a low rainfall (between 300 and 500 mm per year). Its two dominant winds are the “Cierzo” coming from the northwest and the “Garbinades”, sea winds from the south.
This magnificent terroir, kingdom of Grenache, gives the white and red autochthonous vines sublime characteristics, expressions of the Mediterranean limestone terroir.
We spent a day with owner and winemaker Marc (and a number of his cats and dogs!) at his neighbouring estate of Terra Remota. He is stylish and design oriented - which is evident as soon as you see the winery that he constructed with a leading Spanish architect Nacho Ferrer. He takes great pride in his work and his land, and he is an experimental perfectionist when it comes to his wines. And he's charming. We look forward to visiting him and his family again soon.
Sustainability rating: 2* (Good)
Terra Remota and Adalta is a visionary winery project. Winemaker and owners Marc and Emma have created something special in the granitic soils of the Pyrannean foothills, with beautifully designed architecture of the winery, built sympathetically into the landscape. The vineyard has organic certification since 2012 and organic practice over its initial 15 hectares since inception, while the Adalta plots are undergoing organic conversion now. Marc uses gravity throughout the winery, and rainwater harvesting from the winery roof which covers the additional watering required in the hot summers of Girona.
